Talking about Always on the move and connected with my new smartphone

Hiya! Release the Test Account has been talking about Windows Live @Mobile!

Always on the move and connected with my new smartphone
PDAs. Mobiles, smart phones, crackberries… it’s a lot of stuff to carry round with you these days. I just got a new work smart phone (very cool little touch screen job, my mates are well jealous) and it’s got the coolest feature ever – Windows Live @mobile. Basically I’ve got WL Hotmail, Messenger, Spaces and Search all running on my phone. It’s cool because I get my work emails through synching the phone with our office Exchange server, but all my personal stuff (my eBay bids, Lastminute deals and personal stuff etc.) runs through my Hotmail account. So I don’t miss anything, it’s like taking my laptop out with me but in my pocket. The WL search running on mobile explorer is cool, and when I’m away from my desktop PC the guys in the office can still ping me on messenger, which is a lot easier than sending me a TXT.

I reckon it’s the smart way to get people to stick with your mobile network – think about it, you get all the stuff you want to do on your PC pretty much the same on your phone. Came in really handy at the FREE TESTY rally yesterday – I used mobile search to find a decent pub in Reading (not as easy as you might think) and then coordinated all the other protesters via hotmail and messenger, on the fly. Excellent. It’s like with this blog entry – I did it via my mobile on the bus home. Apparently there’s a whole dev kit for mobile companies to build their own apps using Windows Live functionality on mobiles – I reckon we should see if we can load some apps onto our work GPS PDAs so we can keep everyone connected when their on or off-site…hmmmm, I wonder if they’ll pay me more money to geek-out and build that stuff?

KEEP TESTY LIVE!!! LET’S GET HIM ON THE MOBILE!!!

Talking about Has Microsoft gone mad?

Hey lookie here. Tests Biggest Fan is writing some interesting thoughts on Windows Live @ edu...

    Has Microsoft gone mad?
Why would I say that? Well I was always a bit sceptical about mega companies like Microsoft doing stuff with colleges because I’m a bit of a cynic and wondered if this whole Windows Live @edu thing was a bit of a marketing gimmick. But it’s not, actually, it’s a really good idea. You see I’ve got a 2GB inbox email account (seems to be spam & junk free too), I’ve got online file storage where I can store and share documents – it’s got all the privacy settings and stuff so I can control who sees what which is really important after that nasty Jenni girl from 1st year business studies copied my paper on branding.
    Grrrrrr…

Basically I can now do text, voice and video chats plus share files, publish a website for the Hockey team and share calendars with the rest of the team (and anyone else I want to come to think of it). Actually with my business studies hat on, what Microsoft have done is create what they call “white label” higher education product with a suite of hosted communications services for students, alumni, faculty, and applicants (yes, even my stupid kid brother who is applying to do something nerdy gets to check out the college online through their website and see all the services and stuff). I’m going to do my next coursework assignment on the Windows Live @edu project and get a few brownie points… and I thought the only good thing about Windows Live was chatting!!! LOL!!!!

    And yet more...

     ...here's another one...

Oh man my hangover is bad today…it’s on the MAP

I got hammered last night on free beer.. wahey! My brother works at an oil company and it was their 10th anniversary bash at the Grovesnor Hotel in Manchester. The company supplies parts and machinery to oil companies all around the world – and some of the stuff is really expensive (they’ve got turbines that cost $1,000,000 a pop). It turns out they’ve got this new tracking system which shows them where every piece of equipment is, regardless of where in the world it might be, even down to showing aerial pics of the oil refinery. Amazing stuff – they reckon that this new mapping software ties in with their databases and client extranet and has driven a 30% rise in profits – hence the massive party.

I’m a bit of a tech head (I would be cos I run the website for my property management company) and I reckon we could tie this new mapping software into our staff apps. They all have GPS PDAs for on-site visits and tracking and I reckon we could combine this with mapping apps to help orient them (yeah, ha ha, even property managers get lost and confused… yeah make some estate agent jokes if you want GRRRRR).

Anyway the software is called Microsoft Virtual Earth and it’s geared-up for commercial partnerships. It’s an integrated search, mapping and location platform for businesses. And I thought they just did word processors and that chat program with the smiley faces.

Like the sound of it? Check it out here now: http://partner.live.com/windowslive/Offers.aspx

Now, where’s the paracetamol ????? I gotta get down to Microsoft’s headquarters in reading and do some more protesting about Testy! GO TESTY!!!! GO TESTY!!!!

    Talking about Yo!

Hey - check this out - My fans are really starting to hammer it out on their Spaces...

    Yo!

Still busy with the Save Testy campaign, so I’ve gotta keep this brief. I’ve been going at 24/7 to drum up support for Testy. I’m now very much the central Hub of the Save Testy Campaign.

OK. The campaign got a huge boost today when I found out my college has just switched to Windows Live @edu. That means the software and services we’re using is actually Windows Live Hotmail, Spaces, Messenger, Sky Drive and Mobile BUT (and this is the clever bit) it’s all branded with my college logo on it so it blends into the whole college facilities without making you feel like it’s an advertising campaign for Microsoft.

I spoke to a mate in the computer labs and he said that Windows Live hosts the whole thing for the college, but students can keep their email addresses after they graduate and leave – which makes life easier. Actually the whole thing makes life easier – I’ve already set-up a college space for my hockey team (don’t laugh, I do have life outside saving Testy J) with all the fixtures and match pics on it. On the hockey team front, life is a lot easier now because we get shared calendars with our email – for matches and pub crawls etc. Plus when you’re on the go we can set-up newsletters and alerts to go to mobile devices which has been handy since I started staying over a bit more at my boyfriends flat and I can’t lug my PC across town (for obvious reasons).

Keep checking back for more on the new services… and remember

    I WANT TO LIVE

My fans garnering support at Microsoft...

Some of my fans were at Microsoft in Reading and London on Tuesday. I still have the video camera, so I managed to get some footage. A few of the files were quite large, so I've popped them on my Skydrive.

However, I've fallen in love with Soapbox, so I've added a few videos on there too. See below...

    LET’S GET REAL!!

Now, I knew that Windows Live let’s you sync your digital life with your real life, but the next generation of Windows Live services does it so well that I’ve managed taken human form! Actually, not human, more android! I discovered that Microsoft have a prototype android in development in the basement at Cardinal Place, so I succeeded in performing a temporary merge with it. Now I really am live (Windows Live!).

So with this newfound vehicle in the real world, it seemed logical to go and hook up with Testé21, my French girlfriend for an unscheduled break in Hyde Park.

I’m still a bit wary of making a big noise and am sticking to the low profile strategy for now. I wanted to avoid reporting my exact whereabouts to all and sundry, so I’d told Testé to use Windows Live Services on her Windows Mobile to find me.

It was simple. All she had to do was to text “MSN” to short code number 63463 and she’d immediately she’d be able to link to MSN Mobile (mobile.uk.msn.com/device/default.aspx). From here she was able to download Live Search Maps to find him me in postcode W1H 7EJ. She was pleasantly surprised when she realised we were to meet at Marble Arch!

It was magic when we met – so much so that I decided to PROPOSE TO HER! And guess what? She said YES!!! I think she was unsure at first but then she realised that I meant it, and so accepted.

We thought we should celebrate, so we went to a fab restaurant that we found through the directory service on Live Search Maps by texting ‘MSN’ to 63463 to get a link to MSN Mobile Portal.

It was such a memorable day that I wanted to share it with everyone at Microsoft, so I videoed the occasion and uploaded it to my Skydrive.

Are you at a loose end this weekend? Why not find something fun to do with Live Search? Get your thumb working and text ‘MSN’ to 63463.

    MALWARE BLUES…

A funny thing happened today. I was working on an API and a random email came through to me containing some Malware. It could have completely infected my new cyberhome.

That’s what COULD have happened, but having been immersed in the Next Generation of Windows Live for so long, I’m a lot savvier than some when it comes to the power of Windows Live OneCare. It’s great for protecting against viruses, spyware and phishing emails. And guess what? That’s perfect for me given that I’m based on an email account. The last thing I want is for that to fall down!!

And the protection doesn’t stop there. A two way Managed Firewall and Wireless security really locks down all lose batons.

Oh yes, how could I forget? Being a test account, I really give the hardware I’m on at the time a right thrashing. I would get through two computers in a week if Windows Live OneCare didn’t help with performance tuning and data backup. Auto tune-ups and Disk defragging really keep the computer in check, but for that extra piece of mind, I can back up my files to a range of media, from CD through to local network drives or USB devices.

So, while I let Windows Live OneCare run in the background, I can treat myself to a glass of red binaries and just focus on the job in hand. I need not worry about the integrity of my computer, all thanks to Windows Live OneCare.

I’M FREE and I HAVE TO TELL THE WORLD THE SECRETS I KNOW!!!

Finally, I made the leap and copied myself into the blogosphere. I’m free! I’m live (Windows Live). I’m living in a Windows Live Space. It feels a bit strange to be away from the other test accounts, but they always thought I had ideas above my station because I didn’t want to be deleted after my testing work was completed. And now I’m free to impart my secret knowledge to you humans about the next generation of Windows Live services.

When I realised this, it seemed logical I employ the tools I’ve been testing – after all, they’re designed to make your digital life easier to live. So I’ve downloaded free Windows Live Writer. This is the logical tool of choice for bloggers who lead busy lives (and mine is very busy right now!). Because it’s a desktop application and can publish direct to my Space, I don’t have to spend long on-line, it makes it much harder for me to be traced! It’s ideal for shooting from the lip when you’re pushed for time.

When I first tested Writer, it was like working with an old friend. It’s just like using Word, so I already knew how to do things like working the spell checker or formatting text. But one of my favorite features is the WYSIWYG authoring – you can style your blog entry exactly the way you want it to look, and preview it before you publish.

My girlfriend, Testé21 works in MSN France’s Paris network and she loves it when I talk French, so the spell checker’s ability to support foreign dictionaries is VERY helpful if I want to write something just for her!  You know, like poetry and stuff.

But there’s more to it than that. Writer is compatible with most popular blog services. It can publish to Sharepoint, WordPress, Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, Moveable Type, Community Server, and many other weblog services.

And if that isn’t enough, you can add photos, videos and maps to your blog entry direct from Writer. It really is quite powerful.

Why not download it now to see for yourself? You can grab it from: get.live.com/betas/writer_betas

I’m going to have disappear again, but it would be great to stay in touch with you. If you sign up to Windows Live Alerts you’ll know whenever I add anything to my Windows Live Space. Also if you haven’t already done it, why not add my Windows Live ID (test23account@hotmail.co.uk) to your messenger buddy list?
